THE SUGAR ACT OF 1764
- Passed by British Parliament on April 5, 1764
- After fall of less reasonable Old Molasses Act of 1733
- Now taxed the colonists 3 pence per gallon of molasses
- Purpose was not to regulate, but take in money
- Used to pay for debt from prior wars
- British admiralty courts for tax violators were created
- Adjusted trade by shutting down the trade to countries other than itself.
- Lessen the rate of smuggling, bribery and corruption in the colonies

- Required to purchase stamp to prove you paid for a tax on any printed item
- If one did not have a stamp, seized and tried in unfair Admiralty Court
- No stamp resulted in jail or fine
- Some colonists were optimistic about new rule funding of America's safety, others questioned the power of England
- Colonists saw this as a way of unjustly earning money from them
- Stamp Act Congress to protest- New York City, October 1765; 9/13 colonies were represented
- Stamp Act and Sugar Act repealed; 1765 British sales to colonies fell 13%
- Ben Franklin warns Parliament of a possible rebellion from the colonists

- Partnered with the repeal of the Stamp Act
- British Government not willing to come to an agreement with colonists
- Passed the Declaratory Act to reinforce Parliament's power
- By nullifying the Stamp Act, it thickened the discipline of the Declaratory Act
- Parliament now claims they have ability to make any law under any circumstances
- Made clear the relationship between the colonists and the British
- Colonists had an advantage; since they were discouraged from past acts, they immediately disregarded this one

- On June 29, 1997 Parliament passed the Townshend Acts
- Charles Townshend, England's Chancellor of the Exchequer, put these acts into effect in order to earn money from colonists
- England taxed most imported goods
- The British Parliament called for a better customs service and gave incentives
- The officials enforced this rule so they can be awarded with 1/3 of proceeds every time law is broken
- Colonists revolted against the unjust tax by boycotting all British goods
- The majority of the colonist banded together to stand up for beliefs
- The neglect and disrespect the colonists showed towards this act ultimately led to the Boston Tea Party.
